Basketball Warmup Drills
Every team needs an adequate warmup before a competition, and basketball warmup drills are the perfect way to get the team working together, warmed up, and focused on the event. Coaches should put as much emphasis on the warmup as the game itself so that players also take it seriously.
Basketball warmup drills usually involve light running, shooting, and teamwork. They are not tiring, but these drills do prepare the muscles for the activity to come and give athletes a chance to get their heads in the game before the whistle actually blows.
Warm-up Backboard Shot
In this warmup drill, players stand very close to the net on either side and shoot at the backboard, not at the net. Players should aim to hit the same spot on the backboard every time and catch the ball lightly as it falls down. This drill focuses on accuracy and speed, with athletes attempting to throw the ball up as many times as possible.
Around the World
Five athletes start at five different points around the 3-point circle. Each athlete has a ball and shoots in succession, so that the balls do not collide in midair. After taking a shot, each player moves one slot down. The player on the end runs behind the basket and to the starting point. Each player should take a shot from each position.
Pass and Bounce
Players should do this drill in pairs. One player holds the ball and chest passes to the other player on the coach’s whistle. The player with the ball then dribbles once and passes back, also on the coach’s whistle. The first player, now with the ball again, dribbles once and passes again, deciding whether to use a chest pass or a bounce pass. Players go on like this until the coach blows the final whistle.
Couple this drill with our "Pass and Replace" girls basketball drill (which can of course, also be used for boys teams).
3-Point and Lay-Up Drill
Players start near the half court line, with one player or a coach at the free throw line. The player passes to the coach, who passes back. As soon as the player has the ball again, he dribbles forward and takes a shot from the 3-point line. Another player or coach is near the basket to grab the rebound. He passes back to the player, who runs in for a lay-up. This player then takes the place of the player or coach rebounding. Once he is replaced from his rebounding job, the first player joins the end of the line again.
Basketball Warmup Routine for Injury Prevention
Basketball warmup drills should be simple and quick. Players do not have a lot of time to devote to warmup drills before a basketball game, and the coach needs to ensure that the players will not tire themselves or risk injury. These basketball warmup drills are designed to warm up the muscles and prepare the athletes for competition. The drills provided here are easily adaptable to different situations and help athletes get ready for some basic basketball activities, such as running, passing, receiving, and shooting.
