Basketball Offensive Plays

Basketball offensive plays are the key to developing a winning strategy at basketball. Without plays prepared before a game, a team will have little chance of succeeding against an organized defense. The following offensive basketball plays teach players how to work as a team, move the ball down the court, and get open for a shot.

The basketball offensive plays provided here offer teams ultimate flexibility. These plays can be made more difficult as necessary, but most are provided as standard, building-block plays that all teams should know how to do successfully.

Criss-Cross Play

Players 1 and 2 start near the half-court line. Player 3 is at the 3-point line on the right side, and Player 4 is nearly opposite him on the left, but closer to mid-court. Player 5 is at the free throw line.

Player 1 passes to Player 3 and runs near the basket on the left side. Player 2 mimics him but on the right side. Player 3 can pass to Player 2 for a shot if Player 2 is open. If not, Player 3 passes to Player 4, who has moved in closer to the top of the key. Player 1 moves into Player 4’s old spot and is ready to receive a pass.

Player 3 then comes under the basket to where Player 1 had been, right near the basket on the left side. He should now be open for a short pass and an easy shot, especially if the defense is overextended.

Man to Man Flash

Players 1 and 2 are on opposite sides of the top of the 3-point circle. Players 3 and 4 are on opposite wings, and Player 5 is near the basket on the right side. Player 5 runs to the free throw line to receive a pass from Player 1. Player 4 cuts toward the basket, looking for a pass from Player 5. If the pass is not available, Player 4 runs to the left to create a screen for Player 3, who runs across the lane in hopes of an open pass and a lay-up. If not possible, Player 3 continues across the court to the wing.

Player 5 can then either pass to Player 4, take a shot himself, or pass to Player 3.

UCLA 1-4 Set

The below video shows a great offensive basketball play that comes to us from UCLA basketball history, worth a quick watch:

Screen and Shoot

Player 1 starts near mid court with the ball. Player 2 and 3 are even with the free throw line in the paint. Players 4 and 5 are at the low posts. Players 2 and 3 shoot laterally out to the edges of the court, while Players 4 and 5 replace them in their previous positions. The players are now virtually in a straight line. Player 1 looks to pass first to the inside two players. If that is not possible, he passes to Player 2, on the outside left.

Player 1 then uses Player 4 as a screen and cuts down to the basket, looking for a pass and shot. If Player 2 cannot pass, Player 1 goes to the right wing position. Player 3 meanwhile replaces Player 1. Player 4 moves right to screen for Player 5, who also cuts toward the basket in hopes of a shot.

The play continues until all players have attempted to run to the low left post for a pass and shot. If none is open, the play repeats itself, with players now in different starting positions.
